Tobacco Road & the Sandhills

Mike Strantz's fever dream in the Carolina Sandhills — golf's wildest ride at a public price.

cult-classicpublic-valuesandhillsstrantz-spectacle

The place

An hour up the road from the Pinehurst crowds, Tobacco Road is the late Mike Strantz's masterpiece of excess — fairways threading between man-made dunes on an old sand quarry, greens hidden behind ridges, and at least one argument per foursome about whether a hole is genius or madness. It is the most photographed public course in the Carolinas for a reason. Around it, the Sandhills keep giving: Arnold Palmer's Mid South, Rees Jones's Talamore with its famous llama caddies, and Davis Love III's Anderson Creek fill the week with real golf at honest rates.

  2. 2

    Talamore & the llamas

AM Open on Rees Jones's Talamore — llama caddie photos mandatory.

  3. 3

  4. 4

    Tobacco Road — the Cup

AM The main event — Strantz's rollercoaster decides the team match. First-timers ride with veterans.

PM Trophy steaks, then the all-time argument: genius or madness?

  5. 5

    Morning nine & home

AM An early nine at Anderson Creek or a lazy breakfast, then point the trucks home.

Why it wins

The single most talked-about round a crew can play without a member sponsor. Tobacco Road is dares, blind shots and towering sand — and the Sandhills stack quality public golf all around it without Pinehurst pricing.

Booking notes

Tobacco Road's tee sheet fills months out for spring — lock the marquee round first, then build the rest. Talamore and Mid South package together with villa stays; ask about replay rates.
