Melbourne Sandbelt

The Sandbelt — MacKenzie bunkers, lightning greens and the best cluster of courses on earth.

The place

Melbourne's sandbelt is the densest collection of elite golf on the planet: a handful of world-ranked private clubs within twenty minutes of each other on perfect sandy soil. Royal Melbourne is the jewel — Alister MacKenzie's Southern Hemisphere masterpiece, whose Composite course has hosted Presidents Cups and whose bunkering is the sport's reference point. Kingston Heath is brilliance on a modest canvas; Victoria, Metropolitan and Peninsula Kingswood keep the standard absurdly high. The clubs are private but welcome organized international visitors — this is the trip that rewards planning ahead.

Where you crash

The resort

Crown Towers Melbourne

Five-star base on the Yarra — the sandbelt runs twenty-five minutes down the road, and Melbourne's restaurant and bar scene is out the front door.

◆ The private house

The Private House

A bayside home in Brighton — the famous bathing boxes down the street, coffee that ruins you for home, and every sandbelt gate within twenty minutes.

5-6 BR · sleeps 10-12 · ~$800–$2,500/nt

The 5-day plan

  1. 1

    Land, flat white, easy loop

AM The long haul lands early morning; check in, shower, and walk the Yarra to stay awake.

PM Optional easing-in loop at a public sandbelt neighbor; laneway dinner in the CBD and an early night.

  2. 2

    Victoria or Metropolitan

AM First members' round — pure sandbelt turf and razor-edged bunkers.

PM Coffee crawl and a Queen Victoria Market wander; wood-fired dinner in the suburbs.

  3. 3

    Kingston Heath

AM The Heath — small canvas, giant reputation.

PM Peninsula Kingswood for the double-round crowd; rooftop bars in the city.

  4. 4

    Royal Melbourne — the Cup

AM The West Course for the team match — putt from the fairway, trust nothing downhill.

PM Trophy dinner in the city; toast the bunkers you'll be describing for years.

  5. 5

The date line gives it back

AM Bayside breakfast in Brighton, then the airport — fly out and land in the States the same morning you left.

Why it wins

Golf's greatest concentration of world-ranked courses sits in one suburb of one city — and with introductions arranged months ahead, a visiting crew plays them back to back, with Melbourne's food and laneway bars filling every night.

Booking notes

Fly nonstop to Melbourne (MEL) from Los Angeles, San Francisco or Dallas — 15-plus hours, and you lose a day to the date line going out (you get it back coming home). The sandbelt clubs are private: international visitors book limited weekday times directly or through a specialist operator, with handicap letters and often a letter of introduction required — start three to six months out. Hire a driver or van; the clubs sit within twenty minutes of each other, and Melbourne's laneways handle the nights.
