Green Lake, WI

The Golf Courses of Lawsonia

Golden Age architecture at blue-collar prices — Langford's boxcar greens above Green Lake.

The place

Architecture nerds make pilgrimages to Lawsonia, and everybody else just enjoys the ride. The Links course, built by William Langford and Theodore Moreau in 1930, is a museum piece of bold engineering — greens perched on enormous pads, hazards with real faces, and the famous elevated seventh green long rumored to be built over a buried railroad boxcar. The Woodlands course next door plays through hardwoods above Green Lake for a complete 36-hole day, and the town of Green Lake supplies supper clubs, lake mornings and a pace that suits a budget-smart buddies trip perfectly.

Why it wins

One of America's great Golden Age public courses at a green fee the whole crew will double-check. Lawsonia's Links is a 1930 masterpiece of massive pushed-up greens and steep-faced hazards, and the lake town around it keeps the trip cheap, easy and charming.
