Erin, WI

Erin Hills

A U.S. Open on foot — fescue, glacial kettles and caddies in Wisconsin farm country.

caddie-programglacial-terrainus-open-hostwalking-only

The place

Erin Hills rolls across glacial kettle-moraine country northwest of Milwaukee, a walking-only, caddie-first course that looked like it had hosted majors for a century by the time the 2017 U.S. Open actually arrived. The scale is enormous — fescue-lined fairways heaving over eskers and kettles — and the setting is monastic: on-site lodge rooms and cottages, a great bar, and nothing to do but golf, eat and argue about the day's match. Supporting rounds in the Kettle Moraine countryside keep green fees honest, but this trip is about repeat laps at one of America's great modern championship venues.

Why it wins

Play the course that hosted the 2017 U.S. Open, walking with a caddie the way the pros did, then sleep on property with the fairways out the window. A one-course pilgrimage that feels like a members' retreat.

Booking notes

Book lodging and tee times together — staying on property is the move, and replay rounds are easier to land as a resort guest. The course is walking-only; caddies are part of the culture and worth every dollar.
