Farmingdale, NY

Bethpage State Park

The People's Country Club — five public courses and the most famous warning sign in golf.

The place

Bethpage Black is the ultimate public-golf flex: an A.W. Tillinghast brute that has hosted two U.S. Opens, a PGA Championship and the 2025 Ryder Cup, guarded by a first-tee sign warning that it is recommended only for highly skilled golfers. It is walking-only, it is hard, and it costs a fraction of any comparable trophy round. Around it, Bethpage State Park stacks four more courses — the Red is the locals' favorite and a legitimate second headliner — so the crew can play every day without leaving the property. New York City is under an hour away when the nineteenth hole needs an upgrade.

Where you crash

The resort

The Garden City Hotel

Long Island's classic grande dame about twenty minutes from the park — polished rooms, a proper bar, and an easy run to the first tee.

◆ The private house

The Private House

A big suburban Long Island rental in the Farmingdale-Massapequa orbit or a South Shore beach house — grill deck, driveway parking for the crew, and Bethpage's gates inside twenty minutes.

The 5-day plan

  1. 1

Fly in & scout the sign

AM Fly into LaGuardia or JFK and make the short hop east to Farmingdale.

PM Check in, walk the clubhouse and the famous first-tee sign, range session, old-school Long Island steakhouse dinner.

  2. 2

    The Red

AM Open on the Red — the property's beloved second course.

PM Optional Yellow loop; bagels, pizza debates and cards at the house.

  3. 3

Blue or Green & the city

AM An easier loop on the Blue or Green to keep swings loose.

PM Train into Manhattan for a big dinner night — home early, tomorrow is the whole point.

  4. 4

    The Black — the Cup

AM The main event: the team match on the Black, on foot, every shot earned.

PM Long survivors' lunch, trophy presentation, cigars and war stories at the house.

  5. 5

    Easy morning & fly home

AM A lazy breakfast or a final quick nine on the Yellow, then the run back to the airport.

Why it wins

A U.S. Open and Ryder Cup venue you can play for a municipal green fee. Walk the Black, survive the warning sign, and carry the story forever — with four more courses on the same property to fill the week.

Booking notes

Tee times run through New York State's reservation system, and non-resident windows for the Black are fiercely competitive — plan the trip around securing that round first. The Black is walking-only; carts and caddies are not part of the deal, so pack accordingly.
